Today was the day we would start our ride along Big Sur. There are different definitions for Big Sur but essentially it's a beautiful 90+ mile piece of coastline made even more special by the close proximity of the mountains. Exiting Monterey was reasonably hassle free but hilly. In fact, we were going up the hills we had descended the night before. Highway 1 was very busy with sunny Saturday traffic made up of mostly Ford Mustangs. Thankfully ...

... is less than the cost of hiring a GPS for the same period! Fortunately, the GPS on the phone is very efficient and we can navigate out of SF quite easily- this is possibly the only good part of it being a Labour Day Weekend, all the natives have abandoned the city- I think they may have all decided to drive the Big Sur with us!

The freeway is great and certainly a lot easier than our Spanish experiences since we can read all the signs here! There is a lot of driving ...

... and then climb up along the side of a couple of cliffs. A little bit of a lot in just under 3 miles. Much fun. Talus caves are not true caves. They are created when boulders crash onto narrow canyons, forming a roof. The park has two, home to several species of bats. I would not mind coming back in cooler weather for 2 or 3 days of hiking. A worthy addition to the Nat. Park ...

... the first place. It was a good feeling to have made it and it also meant that the nacimiento trail was not far off. I was staying close to a car in front of me with my high beams on. I needed that car to show me where the curves were. So I stayed with him as long as I could. Although he was driving a bit fast and really freaking me out because of the low visibility and tight turns. But I handled myself really well. And soon enough I saw the sign for nacimiento rd. I had ...

    ... along the road.

Pebble Beach: There is a 17 mile (toll) road you can drive around Pebble Beach. You get to drive through some of the golf courses on this peninsula which were amazing. I would send my ball into the ocean everytime. I was disappointed that we really did not see much of the actual Pebble Beach Golf Course that you see on TV. The coast line there is quite stunning.
