I arrive at Lake City with Sue proudly equipped with ALL wheel drive (not sure how this differs from 4 WD, but anyway), ready to tackle a difficult mountain route to Ouray, only to be told by one of the visitor center guys that "I sure wouldn't take my Outback on that road". There are a LOT of jeep and ATV rental companies in Lake City, and my guess is that they all have a vested interest in keeping that road ...

pre-planning as a group in this type of situation, and we learned a lot
