So, we purchased bump hats and signed out some lanterns and went underground. Also, this National Monument has a campground, where we spent two nights. If you ever get a chance visit Lava Beds for history and beauty and there's a National Wildlife Refuge right next door.

Day 58 (8/30/10): Our goal for the next to days is to cover 57 miles to get to the Heitman's (the trail angels in Old Station, CA) before dinner. So we are up at 5:30am and hiking 45 miutes later. After 10 miles we reach Burney Falls where they have a beautiful waterfall and a store with FOOD. So we spend a couple hours eating, doing laundry, go through the "hiker box", and rest. ... I wasn't feeling particularly hopeful about making the journey. It was already after noon, you see, and the projected trip time was 6-7 hours. While I certainly could do that within daylight, it certainly didn't leave much time for enjoying the journey. I decided to simply take my chances, and see how the day went.
