Very clean, tidy and a comfortable bed, as was the bathroom with good water pressure in the shower. We were next door to the main office and it was very noisy with people checking in late, one at 1.30am. It was also very light with the outside light shining all night and the curtains very thin, an eye mask solved this problem for me. The staff were very helpful and even allowed us to check-in at 11am rather than 1pm. I thought it strange that the room had a fridge and a kitchen sink but no glasses to have a drink of water with. I would stay here again.

The rooms are recently remodelled and are nice. Our room had a seperate kitchen (not remodelled) which was quite nice. The location is a little 'in between'. On the one side is Main Street Santa Monica (about 10 min walk) and on the other 3rd Street Promenade (also 10 mins). This is both good and bad, I guess. Quiter, but apart from the very popular Cora's Coffee across the street, there is not much else.

Raki had been talking to someone in Seattle who was from Santa Monica and they'd suggested a Mexican place to eat that was really close to our hotel so we took a walk along the promenade past the pier and up into the town centre. The beach was really quiet and had some incredible beach houses along the front, wouldn't like to think how much one of …

We left Big Bear lake thinking it wouldnt take long to get through the hills, but oh the roads, winding with great views of the LA smog. We say a sign to Heaps peak and headed up a one lane road to the top and were at the Heli fire station. Got a tour of the station and the chopper by a couple of firefighters.

    Crossing the Date line

... was delayed because earlier that day a China Air Jumbo had got it all wrong and slowly slithered off the end of the runway into the harbour, spending the day bobbing in the sea like some oversized bath duck. I digress again.

The flight was planned to be 15 hours yes 15 hours crikey I did not know they could fly that far, as it turned out it would only be 14 hours but still that is a long time. Also we would cover 15 hours of time difference ...
