Historical Traveler Reviews Sea Captain Resort on the Bay Clearwater
Great Value For Your Money
Since I relied on the information published on TripAdvisor to help us plan our trip, I certainly feel an obligation to comment on our recent stay at the Sea Captain, Clearwater, Florida (Dec 04-11).
First and foremost I have to thank TripAdvisor for providing the best source of travel information on the Internet. I certainly appreciate people being honest and providing us with an opportunity to read and plan our trip accordingly. I have used this site in the past and would never think of travelling without first reading a series of reviews. What an outstanding web site.
Based on our "homework" our stay at the Sea Captain met all our expectations. I travel a lot and have stayed at several hotels over the years. Although the Sea Captain is not a recognized name or some grand resort, it has a real family/friendly feel to it. You are sincerely welcomed and feel at home. During our stay we got to know the staff a little bit and can only praise their hospitality.
As we were travelling with our 3-year-old, we rented a suite with two double beds. The room was spacious with a door separating the bedroom, two televisions, a pull out chesterfield, a table and four chairs, a sofa chair, a small fridge, a small microwave and a small stove. The kitchen was nicely equipped with pots, pans, kettle, small coffeepot, utensils and misc. kitchen items. We stayed in suite 21. I would recommend suite 18, 19 or 20 as suite 21 had a hallway on the opposite side of one exterior wall.
The hotel has a web site that is worth visiting. It truly captures the hotel without trying to pass on as something different. What you see is what you can expect.
The hotel is exceptionally clean. The pool (81 degree's) and the hot tub (102 degree's) are crystal clear and beautifully maintained.
Parking is free, spacious and very close to your room.
A major grocery store (Publix) is located within a five-minute drive.
The Clearwater public beach, Pier 60 and two children playgrounds (age appropriate with covered roofs) are three minutes from the hotel.
The neighboring hotels are under construction but we never heard a noise.
The grounds are beautifully maintained and provide an opportunity to be by yourself (chairs, benches, dock, and hammock).
The marina offers an array of activities (eating, walking, dolphin site seeing boats, charter fishing boats, para-sailing boat, pirate boat, speed boat, dinner cruises). The boats pass by the hotel throughout the day and add to the character of the hotel.
The only thing that I did not like about the hotel was the room door locks (old style key cylinders). As our room key has obviously been shared by many people over the years, I prefer for safety/security reasons to stay in hotels that have card reader door locks (re-programmed after each stay).
If you are looking for a nearby hotel that is upscale (and likely with card reader door locks and likely at twice the price), the Sheraton Sand Key is down the road and is in a beautiful area.
Having stated the above, I certainly recommend the Sea Captain based on value.
Our expectations were met and we would certainly stay again.
I cried when we had to leave the Sea Captain Resort
The only bad thing about the Sea Captain Resort was saying goodbye. To make matters worse, two dolphins were playing in the harbor right off the lawn as we boarded the shuttle bus. The Sea Captain is like stepping back through a magic portal to simpler times. No pretension here, just clean rooms, friendly chatty staff with a smile and wave, game boards, fishing docks, big verandas, and a wonderful view. No spa, no valet parking, no big egos, no battles, no brats, no video games; lots of clean towels, lots of space, lots of smiles, lots of cute little families and relaxed retirees.
returned from sea captain on 11th november o4, wonderful weeks holiday, immaculate clean accomodation, superb location on waterfront, very close to beach and resterants, small peaceful little motel. Can't fault anything about the place and would not consider anywhere else in clearwater
White glove clean
Has a great pool area & is only about a block from the beach....You can walk to great seafood restaurants. Older place, but well maintained and extremely clean. I chose this from a review you had published & their web site.... The rooms are like they appear on their web.... I will go back..... It was great....
Made our whole Trip!!!
This place made a good trip an excellent trip! Super clean rooms, great location, and laid back atmosphere made the Sea Captain worth every penny. We were able to walk to the beech/pier and Captain Memo's pirate cruise without the worry of where to put the car. The King size bedroom with pull out couch in the separate livingroom made for nice private evenings, even while traveling with the 8 year old. Two 27" tv's and small fridge with kitchen area made for a very comfy home away from home. We will be back!!!
Best Little Motel in Clearwater
What an absolutely charming motel! We stayed a week in October. The weather was wonderful, the staff extremely friendly and helpful. They have a caretaker that is always working on the grounds and making everything sparkling. Can't think of one bad thing about the Sea Captain!
Well worth the money
After reading reviews for area places to stay in Clearwater we chose the Sea Captain. We were not disappointed. Pleasant staff, clean rooms, king-sized beds and two short blocks from the Gulf. Our children enjoyed swimming in the motel pool as much as they did the Gulf. We enjoyed watching the boats come in and go out from our balcony. Also - not only were we near the Gulf but also Pier 60, where the night time activities were great. Absolutely would stay here again.
Best lodging decision I ever made..
My husband and I usually stay at one of the larger hotel chain type lodgings, but thought we would try something smaller for a change..And I am so glad we did..The motel is directly on the Clearwater marina, and a very short block and 1/2 to the beach..you can even fish from their docks if you like..The rooms were spotless and the large open porches were wonderful with tables and chairs to eat a meal outdoors and watch the boats or just relax and converse with other guests...The atmosphere is very relaxed, pool and jacuzzi crystal clear, and the owners very accomodating..it is within walking to many restaurants and very close to the Pier..Obviously, can't say enough about the Sea Captain..I know my husband and I will definately be returning..
Wonderful Resort and Best location
This hotel was wonderful!! It's across the street from Pier 60 and the beach and across the bay is the marina where all the water activities are held. We enjoyed sitting by he hotel pier and watching the boats come in at night. All the larger hotels do not have much day time activity and have to walk down to our location. It was great for our teenagers because we gave them a walkie talkies and we were always in contact. The rooms are clean, and have a small stove/oven, microwave and fridge. Beautiful swimming pool and hot tub with free use of clean pool towels. They had croissants, orange juice and coffee every morning. We will definitely go back again!!!
Has it all
In my opinion, the Sea Captain has it all. We have visited on many
occassions and each room has been decorated to have its own
personality. The rooms were clean, with efficiency kitchens equipt with
microwave and refrigerator. The pool was sparkling clean and along side
there was a shuffle board court. or you could relax in the hot tub. A
view of the marina from our window with an occasional Pirate Ship
sailing by. The beach is a block away along with quaint little
boutiques and sovienier shops up and down the boulevard.
I would highly recomend this resort and will absoulutly return to stay for future vacations.

... sand castles. I snapped a photo of this older couple walking down the beach with their adult son, hand in hand just living in the moment. The water there was crystal clear and the sand was very fine and filled with many varieties of sea shells. We stayed as late as we could watching the sunset directly ahead of us dropping behind the clouds at water level. Just gorgeous! We vowed to return there and stay for a few days during our next Florida visit ...

In the last hour, we found two of the best rides of the whole trip - a dangle-down roller coaster that did loops without the discomfort of rattly-brain syndrome, and Cheetah Hunt that was wonderfully smooth and fast. Most of the information can be found in one of Sleep Numbers owners manual or instructions, and most, if not all of the components, new and used can be found on E-Bay. There were many recommendations from past cruisers. Since there were eight of us, we were an ideal size to arrange private tours. After e-mailing the others, everyone agreed to being part of "The Gang of Eight."
