      ... including the Appalachian Trail (twice), The Long Trail, and the John Muir Trail. We filtered water from a horse trough and pressed on to a windy yet beautiful valley. We watched the sun set, and immediately the wind turned incredibly chill. I feel I have a slight fever, but I think it's from the altitude. This is probably the highest I have ever been.       Left Bishop when it was hot and for 140 miles of the total travelled it got hotter & hotter up to, I was told, 104 F. I received some strange looks in a service station taking my t shirt off, soaking it in cold water in the sink then struggling to put it on.       The drive was really scenic, with amazing desert and mountain ranges surrounding us - a big change from the sea and cliffs of the coast. We passed many oil rigs, orange orchards as well as of course a lot of rocky and sandy desert.

      We are writing this entry from Los Angeles...we actually left the Pacific Crest Trail near Mojave and hitched a ride to the big city where we are spending the weekend recovering and preparing the next leg of our journey. We are now 567 miles from the Mexican border. Another 3.5 weeks of work and we'll have completed PHASE 2 of our journey.
