Drove from Las Vegas to Taos, which was the shortest point to point drive I have done (under 2 hours).

I took the scenic route because - uhm - the GPS chose the scenic route. This took me through the Carson National Forest which was great for two reasons:

        - Great trees in autumnal colours. While I cannot distinguish the browns / greens very well, I could appreciate the multiplicity of the shades present. At ...

... beautiful steel structure in 1966. We walked the full length of the bridge and that included the one who doesn't like heights. And, Erin, we thought of you when the semis rolled by and the bridge vibrated. We know how you would have loved that feeling. NOT! What a beautiful view of the gorge! Amazing work of Mother Nature! ... were not expecting what we saw, which was truly awe inspiring. The land is flat and empty as far as you can see, and then this massive gorge opens up in the middle of the earth. And deep, deep below there is a tiny rushing river. It was beautiful.

Heading back to Albuquerque, we took the Low Road, which follows the Rio Grande. Taos is a lovely town, but the roads in and out make it truly memorable.

OK so I did a bit more investigating about this Kit Carson chap with a group discussion at the breakfast table at the B&B this morning and it was pretty much confirmed that this chap was a scoundrel and did indeed have confused morals, so there you go. I did get a bit of yesterday's history wrong, so to correct some of it the area originally belong to the Indians, the the Spanish came and it became their territory, but when they started to ...
