... which was much like the I55. Miles and miles of flat arable land with no relief. I think that's what you call 'big sky' landscape.. Every now and then there is evidence of the wealthy plantation style of housing, although still called plantations they are now enormous farms with massive irrigation vehicles and crop spraying aerodromes.

Before leaving Memphis, we stopped by the National Civil Rights Museum located at the Lorraine Motel. The second floor balcony of this motel was the site of Martin Luther Kings assassination back on April 4th 1968. The museum was recently redone and expanded and was preparing for a grand reopening this weekend on the 46th anniversary of his death. We could see only a few exhibits, but they were profound and well done. Looking at the old photos from that fateful day, that section ...

No great poker news to report today........the real story is the MESS this place is. We had floods in the Rhine, record temps in Vienna, and now ice storms in Mississippi. We received ice, rain, and flash flooding in places...then it all froze. It's one hell of a mess here.

... you’d have a perfect movie set. Many of these towns therefore seem almost frozen in the 1950s/60s—but in a sad, decrepit, abandoned way.

Another story telling 'blast from the past’ is the price of gas at many abandoned gas stations. We saw one that didn’t look too old showing gas as being advertised at $2.40. But I had to wonder how long ago the gas station advertising gas for $1.69 closed down?
