          ... Alders on the other hand are the only wood of choice for smoking salmon giving it a wonderful taste. If you've never had fresh smoked king salmon, you have no idea what you are missing! Alder trees however, grow like weeds in Ketchikan and are thought of more of as a nuisance than anything else.           ... and another 1.5 hours to walk the trail around the big room. After that, we took the elevators back to the surface in what may very well have been our longest elevator ride ever--75 stories up.
