... headed for showers at a petrol station for $8 each. They were really nice and used by campground guest next door. Feeling refreshed we walked to the Totem Inn for a few drinks before dinner. It was our last meal together which was a strange feeling as the days had passed so quickly and it didn't seem like we should be Anchorage bound tomorrow. Dinner was nice and all to soon we were heading back to camp ready for bed.
Valdez, Alaska, United States usa2009aswmHere's the most recent things I've been up to. We helped put on a crosscut saw competition for Cordova's Centennial Fourth of July celebration which was fun but very busy. The crew spent a week at a cabin on a trail called Power Creek. We put a lot of miles on our legs in a short amount of time but it was a great trip and we all had lots of fun. The ...
Cordova, Alaska, United States thedartHere's some stuff from the middle of the summer. We had a good spike trip for eight days on Lake Elsner Easement which was some of the hardest work we've done all season. We hiked about 40 miles in five days with a minimum of fifty pounds on our backs everyday. It was exhausting and buggy and ...
Cordova, Alaska, United States thedartSorry it's been a while since I gave everyone an update of my wheelings and dealings, it's been a busy couple of months up here. For those not in the loop, I got to AK in April and have been working on my third season on the trail crew here in Cordova. When I arrived, there was lots of snow on the ground but the weather was for the most part, cold and clear. It'd take a long time to explain all the activities I've been up to but suffice to say that the ...
Cordova, Alaska, United States thedart... which is always a drag. But we figured getting to the tunnel an hour in advance of the ferry would be fine. It almost wasn't. The next tunnel opening for our side would be at 12:30, fiften minutes before the ferry was to leave. Sarah and Michal anxiously rocked the car and I turned up the music on my ipod, trying to get them to chill out. It was quite a bit of money that was spent on ferry tickets and it wouldn't do well to waste them on a missed boat. But ...
Cordova, Alaska, United States crazystrange... after a five am departure. My memory began to cause salivation as we approached Valdez- in my opinion a somewhat humdrum place with an awesome Thai restaurant. I was pretty bummed out when the Thai place was closed, so we hit the highway right off. A relaxed day of driving brought us somewhere into Canada, near a river and a bridge whose names I can't remember. I fired a few shots of my bikes on top of the truck, as to me, two bikes together with a Kayak make ...
Cordova, Alaska, United States gringo-gauchoOn our way to College Fjord - not looking promising. Thick, low cloud all the way to water level - and it's raining. The weather improved marginally during the course of the day, but right when we reached the only really visible glaciers, we were running late for our booked sitting for dinner. Fortunately, we ...
College Fjord, Alaska, United States stevegraceToday we were at the Hubbord glacier for the second time since I have been on board. I was there 2 days ago but I was workin. Today I had it off and it was my lucky day cause the captain invited all the crew up tot the bridge to watch the glacier from there. He had food and hot chocolate for everyone and we ...
Hubbord Glaicer, Alaska, United States beaudy... facility with a strong education mission and it is extremely interesting. They also had one of the best gift shops we have seen up here and we restrained ourselves and only bought a birthday present for Theresa who is very fond of whales. Right Theresa? (It may not be in your hands by your birthday but it will be when you come to visit next month.) We then went back to our campground and got settled in to our "home" for a couple of days. Guess what - we were parked ...
Vadez, Alaska, United States pat-don-alaskaLast night we sailed by the rest of Lamphere Glacier - quite impressive. Two to three arms extended out into the ocean. It was huge, and I suspect we were seeing part of the ice field as well. Dinner was a lot of fun too - I spotted two different sets of killer whales blowing puffs of air out of the water. Plus 2 Dahl's porpoises jumped out of the water right next to the ship. Unfortunately, Steph was really seasick, so we ended the night ...
