Out of the way and in shady location

Located near I-17, the Motel 6 Phoenix - Black Canyon is located about northwest of downtown. And one of the cheapest options, with reception being open 24 hours. And oh boy, while it is part of the Motel 6 chain, it does not mean that they are all the same. And I don't mean that in a good way.

Where do I begin? First off, the area that this place is located in, is a shady area at night. I did feel unsafe at times. Making it more difficult, is that the reception office and the hotel rooms are in separate buildings, with some rooms making it difficult to reach by walking. And one side of the building does not seem to be well-lit at all, which makes it unsafe.

The rooms are pretty much bare, with no carpeting, and no chairs in the room. While that may not be a big deal, it feels like being as cheap as possible. Only a flat screen TV and a cabinet drawer, along with the beds. The bathrooms are very basic, and cramped.

The air-conditioner does seem old, as it has a hard time keeping the room cool. And there were bugs in the room, making it feel like only minimal effort was made to keep the room clean.

But to be fair to it... the beds are surprisingly comfortable, all things considered. And the staff are really nice. Plus it is the cheapest option, with reception being open 24 hours, which is a good thing for those arriving very late. And it is a lot better to have a roof over your head than spend a homeless night.

But it is unfortunate reminder that you get what you pay for. If not arriving late into town and/or relying on public transportation, I would recommend staying somewhere else.

We left Arizona to start our round the world adventure. With several stops planned along the way we wanted to travel as light as possible and limit the size and amount of luggage we would be carrying. After months of planning we settled on one 15 lb bag each and a small day pack to meet the airline requirements. The plan is to buy what is needed along the way, toss when things become stale and ...
