    ... and crossing one time zone. The traffic as we approached Chicago was bumper to bumper so we arrived about half an hour late.

    Kirsty's sister Katie was joining us on our travels for a couple of weeks and meeting us here in Chicago. We had seen that her flight had been delayed too so decided that we would try and get to the airport to surprise her. We hopped on the L Train (Chicago's subway / above ground rail network) and travelled to the airport.

    ... gate. Finally, the crew arrived and we got off the plane at about 5:00 and then waited another 10 minutes for our gate-checked bags. We hustled to get to the gate for the flight to Amsterdam and got there just as they were boarding. Whew! That was a relief.
