Construction and the Cassiar

We started the day early (6 AM) and drove the 1st part of the day on the Alaska Highway. Very little traffic but some construction, Scenery starting to get more spectacular and we stopped to view a deer on the side of the road.

Turned off on the Cassiar Highway. This is an alternate to the Alaska Highway (designated as a remote highway). First part was narrow and full of ruts but it got better as we went along. We had to wait 20 minutes at one construction area to follow a pilot car a...

... poor road conditions. Those who chose to detour from our scheduled route were to meet back with the group in Prince George, BC on September 3.

Two of our companian RVs decided not to continue on. Roy and Brinda will meet us in Prince George, but Wayne and Barbara Burnett are leaving us for good. They have had some issues with their leveling jacks and have an appointment at the factory ...

Flying through the Yukon

"Late" (7:00am) on the morning of the 12th, I left Palmer and headed back toward the Yukon. It was a hazy/smoky morning and pictures of distant mountains were not promising. No large animals spotted today, but I did see 4 pairs of trumper swans (one with babies) in various little lakes along the way. The road surfaces today were some of the worst of the trip -- both in Alaska and the Yukon. Good ...

Dease Lake RV Park

Didn't take any pictures on the way, but the view was great to see if you didn't have to watch the road so close. This section of road was bad, bad. But we made it thought to the next stop. I inserted a couple of picture Alaska for you to see. Ray and Christa

Halfway to Hyder

Knowing we did not have a long drive today, we started the day slowly. I walked to the nearby grocery store to pick up a few items we needed before closing up the trailer. Then it was down the Cassier. This is a road whose reputation precedes it. It is known for its gravel portions and bumpy pavement. We found, however, that the road was not all that bad so far. We did ...

Sparse Facilities

As I rolled into Dease Lake, BC I had a difficult decision to make. The gas station closed right at 5:00 pm, the attendant was starting up her truck right as I pulled in. She said that there wouldn't be any available facilities open for the rest of the day and that the next available services were 235 Kilometers away in Watson Lake. I had just over a quarter of ...

Whitehorse to Kitwang,BC

... your triangle- it's about the legs) when I pass a turn off for 37 south. I think "glory be! The south road Already!" so I check my map, and sure enough 37 takes me south and puts me out by Prince George, BC which I'm vaguely aiming for. So I take it. Guess what? It's the Cassiar. And everyone was right, it's gorgeous and full of wildlife. I saw so many Bears I stopped taking pictures of them. "Oh look, yet ...

Skagway

Our next port is Skagway. We have signed up with the Alaska Mountain Guides to go rock climbing. The boys are very excited, Steve and I are not quite sure this was a good idea. We get picked up by the guides, they are your perfect looking like "mountain men ...

Mighty Moe's

We were up at 6:15 a.m., and it was very cold especially heading to the showers. We were ready to leave at 8:00 a.m. but weren't in a rush so we headed into Whitehorse to catch the "Bath Tub Races". This was a two day race from Whitehorse to Dawson City on the Yukon River. There were about eight entries, all with 8 HP motors. The current was quite fast on the Yukon River.  It was well organized and there was a very good turn out of the locals.  Bob addressed his weakness ...
