          The two main waterfalls - American Falls and Horseshoe Falls are separated only by a small island which splits the river before the water drops over the falls. Both falls are fed from Lake Eerie and then run into Lake Ontario.

          ... This is in fact where the river turns at a 90 degree angle. The flow of the river is too fast for it to take the bend and hits the wall and the water beneath the surface turns in an anti-clockwise direction before setting off again.
