We arrived this evening and checked into our really nice hotel. We then went back out to see if the visitor center was still open. It wasn't, so we went to check out a lighthouse, an old furnace at the Hiawatha National Forest, and a small town called Christmas. ... is really hard to ignore a very large plop of bird **** right in the middle of the windshield. It seriously hampered the sightseeing untill our first fuel stop. We took our time and stopped in Hog Island at a small country store in search of local delicacies. We found plenty. Cheese Curd, Kippered Beef, Smoked Whitfish and Salmon along with Pasties. After a nice long sleep in our tent in Hiawatha Natl Forest of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, we are on the road again, and just in time. We missed the rain by about 20 minutes. It raining now, with no hopes of clear sky in sight. It's a perfect driving day to get more miles behind us. We are now at 1103 miles and GPS says 467 miles to go! Mara and are getting a chuckle out of UP MI convenience store supplies....about a dozen different kinds of whiskey ...

dinner, watched a sunset that kept getting more purple-y and orange-y with
every minute, and then crawled into the truck to sleep because the tent was
still soaking wet. I reached out for the hand-whittled, beaver-chewed wooden
wading staff that I had been given for the trip. The one with a hole bored
through the top with some line and a carabineer attached so it could clip to my
backpack.. My hand darted ...
