A week in Split

... went into the main town of Split to visit Diocletian's Palace. Diocletian was a Roman emperor who retired in Split. He had a beautiful palace built where he stayed until he died.    Dave and I paid for a tour guide who informed us of the history behind Diocletian and the parts to the palace. We also wandered underground where we saw lots of original pieces to the palace and rooms that still stand today. It was ...

Coke a day keeps booze away

... me promise never to drink again and Coca-Cola was the only thing that tasted as good as wine so I started drinking that. "Now I have a glass in the morning, before and after lunch, with my dinner and then before I go to bed. I never drink anything else." The pensioner added that he has no desire to give up his liquid habit, vowing: "Coke is my drug now, and I'll drink it till I die."

... a train at 5pm to Split and arrived at 10pm and it was dark and i couldn`t find the hostel, but i ran into 4 Sweedish boys who were also lost and together we found our way to the hostel where i stayed for 2nights and the weather was beautiful and hotter than Zagreb, so yes i finally got to wear my shorts and t.shirt and also spent 1 day sunbathing and swimming in the cool but crystal clear waters. I stayed in a lovely hostel where there were 4 turtles and 2 ...

Around Hvar Island

... my drive-around day by winding down to this sleepy fishing village where I had the best Calamari ever. Although Hvar is very tourist-oriented, it was refreshing to be away from the huge crowds of Dubrovnik, and although I'm sure it's elbow-room-only in August, in late September there were enough people to make it feel comfortable. And interesting people, too. It's small enough to be bumping into people (from the ferry, bus, hotel), and I didn't eat alone whilst there.

Severnj Velebit

World's Smallest Town?

... baubles made of Murano glass. 2) Motovun - a small village perched high on a hilltop and surrounded by stone wall. The place is known for truffles (not the chocolate kind!), which grow in the surrounding hilly forest areas. The place is supposedly quite sleepy for the most part, but we arrived during their annual film festival, so there were movie buffs and I suppose film-makers and such hanging out all over town. It would have ...

Croatia in November

... talked about all the things that you could do in Croatia in the summer, but never really mentioned the long list of winter activities. I was sitting with a girl who was researching Croatia and things to do online and she came across a website that stated that "if you are in Croatia from October to February, the only things to do are sit inside and watch TV and play Playstation and drink because you are so unhappy that you are in Croatia in the winter." We cleared pretty early on Wednesday ...

Water, water everywhere!

... along with wolves and fox. This caused some anxiety when, late in the day, we started off on a hike at the top of the lakes, expecting to be able to take a boat across the lower lake to the exit, only to find that the boats had stopped running. Without a proper map we found ourselves walking in circles seeing the same waterfalls over and over as the sun sank lower in the sky. The park is completely natural...no nightlights.. and we didn't have a ...
