Well Off the Beaten Path

... forces finally won.

So now that the history lesson is done you can get a feel for what Ryanair has deposited me in. A bus to the city passed through miles of sunflower and corn fields that suddenly gave way to the typical Soviet style apartment blocks. As always in Eastern Europe they are crumbling, gray and on their last legs after only a few decades of use but these caught my eye in a different way. A closer ...

Fantastic Food and Family

Spent day before zesterdat sightseeing in Zagreb with Rosa's Mums cousin and daughter, then to dinner with her cousin. Caught trams which is easy!
Yesterday we travelled by bus from Zagreb to Rosa's cousin in Osijek in the east of Croatia near the Bosnian border. We are having a great time. Yesterday we ate constantly from 4:30 until 10pm! Sznitsel, salad, then off to Uncles for meat and cheese platter, pastries (savouries) followed by cake, then home for icecream! Fantastic ...

Back on the road... eek

... appear to be cobbled. Which explains why the route doesn't use some obvius roads. And another reason why a shortcut might be unavailable.

Last night I finally changed the speedo to KM losing the odometer reading in the process. I also set the clock by my watch.
So I'm now doing about 18km/h which is a slow 10 mph but the heat is tough. Stopping makes it worse. Forecast said 33 degrees today.

I'm grinding across the plain but its clear that my original target is way ...

Better at last...

... place on a ride round. So following the river bank path off I went. Soon the path ended but there was a road. Which lead through the shanty town; its not huge but its clearly different.

Eventually reached the supermarket and was able to buy veg in small quantites but no gaz. Returning to the riverbank (where we went for a drink) and followed it along until the bars ...

An embarrassment..

... Going through town is fine, traffic isn't too intense and the wind though gusty isn't too strong. I reach the outskirts and then pull onto the long open straight to the next town. Whoaa, an average speed of 12 mph gets knocked down to 8 then 7 mph and I'm having to work to maintain it. The bike has the aerodynamics of a chelsea tractor and the engine is clearly still underpowered. After 300 yards a bus stop appears and I stop to rest. If ...

... much of the morning on the bed watching english TV (BBC world). With a bit of sleeping and internet in between. Mid afternoon I woke up felt a bit better and went out looking for the way out of town (a personal nemesis) and found the supermarket and a motel. Actually a mini market, disco, filling station, lorry park restaurant and motel in one. Next time I need to ...

A tough day but a new country.

... route; it bypasses road 51 by going 12 km west then coming back again. As it was Sunday I reckoned traffic would be light and lorries absent. In practise this paid off; although the road didn't follow the river exactly and did a bit of climbing it was much faster. The wind was still a problem but thats inevitable. Todays target was a town called Apatin which is actually on the danube. The map lists it as having accommodation although the maps record is rather blemished ...

Capitals Beginning with B

... I left Kosovo two weeks ago, and I'll be happy to leave Serbia tomorrow, as well. But back to sightseeing. Returning from the citadel, I stopped in at the Nikola Tesla Museum. I had the honor of being the only visitor and was treated to personal demonstrations of his many discoveries, perhaps the most important of which was a use for alternating current electricity, allowing power to be transported long distances through high voltage lines. He also developed ...

CROATIA HORVATSKO CYCLING

... belongs to serbia. bitter humor. she also said that if the croats had an ounce of the confidence and cokiness of the serbs, they could fly to the moon and back every day. she told us that from her experience, after the serbian occupation of osijek, and after the serbs killed off the people who wouldn't give up their properties, they took over and stayed living in and working the farms of the croats, for 7 ...
