... them. And watching the lava flow around it.

We rewarded our hike with in and out burger. It was pretty good too. Although bad for you to east fast food regularly, unless you go to walmart and buy fresh food there (or another supermarket), it is much cheaper to go to take away than to a restaurant (1/4 of the price) and you don't have to tip. Like $6 a meal is pretty normal and cheap.

... Then a walk through the Devastation Area, wiped out by the mud flow. Almost complete re growth after 100 years. Good interpretative panels. Next stop Summit Lake, at 2032 metres, with good views of Lassen Peak at 3187 metres. Reached The Summit at 8511 feet, 2586 metres. Descended to Lake Helen and then Emerald Lake. Passed Diamond Peak at 2429 metres. The amazing park highway, like many in other national parks, was constructed in ...

First stop Merrill for coffee. This is obviously duck shooting country- dozens of duck paraphernalia at the cafe, as well as a stuffed cougar! Lovely views of Mt Shasta as we drove. Another volcano, topped with glaciers, looked a bit like Mt Fuji in the distance, rising to 4316 metres. Very different country today - less dense forest, some almost desert terrain and cattle farming country. Crossed into California, ...

... Bumpass dream. Bumpass Hell. After this 5 km hike with some height in it we went over to the Boiling Cold Lake. Another hike where we saw a rather disappointing pool with a small cold water geiser. We then worked out way back, did some laundry and set camp. It's gonna be cold again. Another campfire. National Parks are called America's greatest idea. They are for sure but we have to keep in mind that most of them, and most certainly the oldest ones, are basically ...

... Lunch was good though. We moved along the 98. Stopped at historic McCloud. Again a town with nice old buildings. A historic Main Street. Well, don't get overexcited; we are talking like 7-8 buildings here. By 17:30 we entered Lassen Volcanic. Turns out our campground was about 40 miles in the north of the park. But there were choices. Of course. We therefore chose to leave that what it was although it had some advantages. There were lava beds and a beautiful ...
