... dropped off the car, and arrived at the check-in counter at 5:35 AM.

Unfortunately, it was too late. The United system revoked our check-in trial and the very helpful guy at the counter booked us for the next possible flights to Houston and Leon. We had to pay $75 each for changing the flights and, as we noticed later, for seats with more room for the legs.
