      We now find ourselves in the town of Ridgecrest, which sits in a desert like landscape in the east of California i.e. middle of nowhere. If the Mars Exploration Rover trundled past our hotel I wouldn't think it was lost here.       What I hated the most was all the negativity. Most of it was good natured ribbing, but telling a kid he’s stupid, or an idiot, even in jest, does affect that individuals self esteem.       ... dump, the only motel looked closed, if it wasn't it should have been. We bought some gas and met the only crazy man in Trona (or maybe they were all like him).
