... have a higher regard for Austin as a travel destination on its own merit. The workshop itself took me into a less touristy area of Austin, as we were at the J.J. Pickle Research Campus of the University of Texas at Austin. That gave me the opportunity to try the local craft beer at North by Northwest brewery an restaurant. Another highlight was the Italian banquet at Maggiano's - it's a lot of fun hearing stories from a table full ...

While we missed out on SXSW, we did get to see "The Wagoneers," a kick ass alt-country band that played the inaugural SXSW back in 1986. They performed a fine, electrified set at The Continental Club Sunday night that managed to distill the essence of rockabilly and The Bakersfield sound into a couple of grueling hours. Would've been worth $100 at The Enmore in Sydney. We paid ten bucks a piece ...

My cousin Ryan and his wife Christina, who I have not seen in years, offered us their spare bedroom on the north side of Austin for our last two nights in town and we quickly accepted. We made plans to meet for dinner and some ...

Lunch was at a Texas Bar B Cue joint in Palestine. I was drawn to it by the large number of cars outside. The sandwich was delicious. Seems like everyone in town showed up for takeout or a meal. The owner's best friend (who had served in the Army then come home to work with his buddy) said it had been going for thirty years.

... but squashed our plans to go out for dinner. Our house in
Austin was across from Fulmore Middle School and it was purple. It
reminded us a lot of our first house. There seemed to be many more ants
and it had one of those 2 in 1 washer and dryers which drives Kara
crazy. We were doing laundry 24.7 and air drying everything. Due to
the conditions of the purple SoCo house we did a lot less cooking than
we would have liked but this is ...
