36 Lakefront Drive Te Anau, South Island, New Zealand, 64(3)2497435
Friday, January 26 Doubtful Sound to Te Anau We awake to the sunrise peeking through some light clouds in the distance. The morning light on the fiord is beautiful. We know how lucky we are to have sunshine on our 2 cruise days. This area gets rain about 200 days a year. That's why it is so green! This morning's highlight is watching a couple pods of bottlenose dolphins that swim alongside the ship, sometimes leaping out of the water. After a delicious breakfast and sailing back to Deep Cove ...
Te Anau, New Zealand joycekeithThe reason to stay in Te Anau is to visit NZ's Fjordland. Te Anau is a very small resort, it has everything you need but there is not much to do if you are not doing the Fjord excursions or walking the tracks. We had 3 whole days here, so we decided to do both Milford and Doubtful Sounds plus a trip to the glowworm caves on the other side of Lake Te Anau. There is a debate about whether Milford or Doubtful is better so we wanted to do both to form our own opinion. I should point out at this s...
Te Anau, New Zealand robandemmaIt didn't take us long to get to Te Anau which was convenient as today's schedule was planned tightly. We arrived at the Te Anau Lakeside Camping Ground, checked in to secure a bed for the night then it was straight back on the bus to head off for what has to be the most stunning, awesome, breathtaking road journey I have ever been on. Apparently, it is rated as one of the most scenically amazing drives in the world. I simply can't describe what we saw so I won't even try. I can't. What I can...
Te Anau, New Zealand scottwozWe rolled into the town of Fox Glacier near the end of the day, just in time to rush in and book a tour for the next morning. The twin lords of the Southern Alps range, Mountains Cook and Tasman, loom over the town to the East, peeking over the nearby bulk of Mt. Fox. This is wet country, about as wet as the fiords to the south. The town gets around 10 meters of rain a year. At the peaks, it's 15 meters of water, but of course, it's snow that falls on those white monsters, around 60 meters a ...
Fox Glacier, New Zealand tabonyhl... too! We set off with our guide through some amazing underground caves, then eventually we are guided silently and with some rather over dramatic hand gesturing into a small boat. Then the lights go out and the guide I image pulls us along a rope on the wall by hand, there is a lot of bashing against the walls! And I can only wonder how if talking would disturb the glow worms, the constant vibration of the boat crashing ...
Te Anau, New Zealand zoe-nz2009_10... carved waterway, surrounded by soaring mountains, not to mention waterfalls snaking their way hundreds of feet down into the Sound below at regular intervals. The kind of place that makes you feel incredibly small. But it's not why I came to the Fiordland. I came to walk the Milford Track, a 54 kilometer journey through the unspoiled beauty that is the Fiordland, and regarded as one of the greatest walking trails in the world. I'm staying at one of the many backpackers hostels in Te ...
Te Anau, South Island, New Zealand sirecho... were impossibly tall, dwarfing the road and making us feel tiny. Once we entered a mountain into the Homer tunnel (doh!) and came out the other side, a vast valley lay before us with a tiny windy road disappearing off into the distance. Never seen anything like it, and probably never will again - it's a shame that photographs can just never do that view justice. Not mine anyway! With the road successfully negotiated we arrived at Milford Sound and the ...
Fiordland, South Island, New Zealand graeme_sarah...
Te Anau, South Island, New Zealand kikiblogtrot... redecoration - but it overlooks the lake and we took a walk round it to the bird sanctuary this afternoon before returning for a cup of tea and catching up with other folk on the computer. It's Milford Sound tomorrow for us and a cruise, hopefully in the dry! Stuart on the other hand is off kayaking for three days and we will probably not see him again until the UK.
Te Anau, South Island, New Zealand 2711andrea... Et quand on arrive a la derniere chambre, on a droit a un spectacle fincroyable. On se croirait de nuit en train d'observer un ciel plein d'etoiles. Capote Man! Moi ...
