... any challenge in life. His basic story is that he was diagnosed with cancer in his late teens, as a result he had one leg amputated. A few years later whilst only in his early 20's he took it upon himself to raise money and awareness for cancer research. He intended to do this by running from the east coast of Canada, all the way to the west coast. He ran 26 miles a day for 143 consecutive days, until he got just outside of Thunder Bay ...

Richtung Great Lakes

Night Danger along the Shores of Lake Superior

Journeying into the interior of northern Wisconsin, making our way toward the Apostle Islands, we passed through small towns, Rhinelander, Ironwood, Ashland (which has a great co-op, bakery and The Black Cat Café, all located next to one another), and Bayfield, and camped on the shores of Lake George (at Lake George Campground) and Lake Superior (Saxon Harbor/Lake Superior County Park). Inclement weather enveloped ...

The Indian Falls

Reference: CHRISTOPHER RAYMOND COX

Day 3 June 30th Tuesday '09

This morning our family woke up late at 10:00am. We put our mattresses away and we headed on to Kakabaca Falls.

My Dad told us that Kakabeca Falls is a giant waterfall that runs into a gorge down to what I think is Kakabeca River.

My Dad told me it was my turn to sit up at the "co- pilot" seat. We passed some hills which I thought were pretty big. But I think the Mountains are allot bigger ...

... the road but I guess they are mostly around in the evening. I'm sure there must be a major mosquito problem as soon as the weather warms up as there is standing water everywhere. One can feel the isolation and awesome wilderness as you seldom see any inhabitants outside of the small towns - no farms or ranches are evident. It is obvious that the majority of places, rivers, creeks and points of interest are named after the Indian heritage. Here are a few but don't ...

... car. The next day we stopped in Thunder Bay. Apperently, in Thunder Bay, the marketing strategies are a little different than down south. But, hey, who am I to judge? From there it was off to Manitoba and the flattest part of the trip.

... bugspray sunk in our pores. But, despite Zoe trying to talk me into being strong, I gave in and pulled my DEET out of my booksack. After all, it was the first time I had worn shorts in about a week! Just as I finished spraying my legs, a mother and her two children came up to me and she asked if she could borrow my spray. Out of reflex, I said, "Oui!" and handed it over to her. Zoe and Simone heard me and chuckled to themselves. We hung around for a few more minutes, waiting for the ...

Immense Voyage Day 9

... Survival." She thought it was poignant and funny, so she picked it up and kept it with her. Cheap souvenir. We also passed many young boy scouts walking with limited amounts of gear and looking very unprepared - in shorts and sandals. Zoe and I just looked at each other, imagining the slaughterhouse of mosquitoes they were unwittingly about to enter, and shared a moment of silent pity. After about 15 minutes of easy walking we reached the parking lot - a mecca of civilization ...

... 94 = okay people, put down the cell phone when you are A) passing people on the interstate B) merging onto the interstate C) in rush hour traffic on the interstate D) when you are pulling recreational vehicles + all of the above! I did like the woman we passed on I-94 near Fargo - in one hand, a cigarette. In the other, a tall tumbler of something amber with ice: iced tea? rum and coke? But she held to 70 mph (115 kph) pretty ...

No. We did NOT see the Sleeping Giant.

Today, we take advantage of the first campsite we've stayed in with hot showers. And of course, what do I do? I forget my towel in the shower stall. So now I need to buy another towel. We continue on to the town of Wawa, on the outskirts of the Lake Superior Provincial Park. Wawa is the home of not one, not two but the THREE largest Canadian geese in the world. Wanting to keep their title, the town just kept upgrading ...
