Hurricanes and high tides are not much fun for the shops and houses in these parts. There was a bad fire in 1881 which devastated a large part of the town, then with rebuilding fairly complete, and funds in general severely depleted due to the rebuild plus the civil war costs which were heavy, there was a 7.2 earthquake in 1886!
