Sunday is for Sinners

At home I'm not a big churchgoer. But in the Cook Islands, everyone is at church. All of the businesses close, people stop working in their yards, the dogs lay down for naps, the chickens stop chuckling....everything here stops for church. I heard a story of a fisherman who was lost at sea, and in the midst of the search and rescue effort...well, Sunday came around. The rescuers stopped being rescuers that day and went to church instead. I swear, it's a true Cook Islands legend about the impo...

"Work" is a relative term

Debi, our local team leader, would be making fun of me right now....I just woke up from what she calls a "Nana Nap." Yep, it's a local term for the little afternoon snoozes required by the elderly island folk. I don't feel like I'm amongst the elderly, but the school kids I've been working with are running me a little ragged! I've been working at the Te Uki Ou School. Every morning at 8 am, I (and roommate Stephanie) retrieve our bikes (or push bikes as they're called here) from the bushes be...

It's all starting to blur together

I'm not even sure what the date is. I have no idea if the Dow is up or down. I don't know if George W. is currently hangin' at the White House or kickin' it at his ranch. I haven't heard the latest on global natural distasters, wars, famines, or anything of the sort. I'm totally, completely, blissfully out of touch....except for this blog. And it feels excellent and whether it's right or wrong, I'm happy to not care at the moment about all of those other things. I think they've been clogging ...

I'll be home for Christmas

It's 0815 hours in Rarotonga, and my roommate Stephanie and I are sitting outside at our favorite spot---Cafe Salsa in downtown Avarua, getting some emails done before biking to Te Uki Ou School for the day. Having a cup of coffee, listening to the roosters crow, watching the scooters stream by loaded up with paddlers from around the world, and typing on my laptop. It's hard to remember here that Thanksgiving and Christmas are fast approaching...how would I even know here? But I'll be home fo...

... Air New Zealand has a great product - consistently good service, new planes, nice food. They just need to fix their frequent flyer programme up and we'd be saying hei kona ra (goodbye) to Qantas.

As we descended down towards Moreton Island I even saw two whales just off shore. What a terrific end to the holiday.

Breezed through immigration and customs and we were in the cab at 8am.

So long since I wrote!

... 3 hour delay from Vegas to LAX so I miss my connection, running around the airport at 1am trying to find someone to help, finally get a hotel voucher so crash out at the hotel then back to the airport first thing only to wait 9 hours for a flight, fly 12 to New Zealand, wait 18 hours in Auckland airport and then 4 hours to the Cooks! Nightmare! But Ive finally made it to the Cook Islands and they are ...

... in town. But we meet some other cruisers who had taken the shuttle and we were indeed in the heart of town. The island is like many other islands in the South Pacific. Tall green mountains form the center of the island. Population areas are on the narrow flat land that forms a border between the mountains and the sea. The whole island is a rain forest. It is lush, green, few or no insects, hot and humid. On Rarotonga, there is a main road that completely circles the island and ...

Rarotonga is closed!

It's Sunday lunch time, not a lot going on. Pretty much everthing closes on a Sunday. We headed to town on the bus (it only runs one way on a Sunday so we get a tour of the island for free!). We had planned to go to church, but didn't get up in time. Saturday night in, turned into Saturday night out and we ended up with some guys from the hostel at Whatever Bar in the ...

... musical act by Dave Burke, a 70+year old Yorkshire man now resident in Australia. He was good. He gave us a really good laugh and also treated us to some singing, and clarinet and tin whistle playing. The shows are still proving to be really worthwhile entertainment. Monday 21st A day at sea today with a warm, sunny, 26 degree, humid outdoor climate. Indoors seems to be kept an even temperature, which is quite comfortable for t-shirts and shorts. The sea was a little more lumpy, but ...
