Having never been to Hong Kong before, we were interested to see how it compared to mainland China. The difference that British rule has had on this small colony compared to the other cities of the Peoples Republic of China (PRC), including Beijing, is very significant (we didn’t visit the modern largest city of Shanghai so can't speak for there).

Hello World!

Today is a perfect day for a day trip! The weather is generally overcast, and there is no storm forecasted for the day. Our place was quite close to the Star Ferry Terminal and caught the noon boat to Macau. Macau used to be a Portuguese Colony and they have their own currency (even though everywhere on the island accepts HKD).

... it was one line, no transfers and first station to last station. nicely air conditioned and I had no problem getting a seat. At the border you follow signs, go through immigration leaving china, walk through a hallway which goes over a tiny canal, go through Hong Kong immigration and voila! ... up of the illuminated skyscrapers right across the harbour. At 8pm, every night, the 'Symphony of Lights' is performed, I don't think the underwhelming lights and music lives up to its grand name but the view was still an amazing one.
