... towers to reach an original section (not renovated) of the wall. On one side of the wall is China and on the other side is Mongolia. We took another toboggan ride down. Before we got on the toboggan our guide showed us pictures of Michelle Obama and kids. Evidently, they visited this section of the wall as well and took the toboggan down. So today we started with Tienaman Square & the Forbidden City. It is so huge! As a single human, you feel dwarfed by the size of the buildings & thelarge open spaces. It is very beautiful. We only saw the west side of the complex. There are only a few buildings you can actually go into & those have a few museum pieces. ... one of the side gardens to get to the main gate. There where speakers there blaring a public service message, which was both orwellian and tranquility breaking. I also saw all the moat boats tied to the dock, the frozen river and about 20 people with shovels clearing the pathway.The forbidden city was pretty magnificent. 7ish CAD got me in, another 7 got me an automatic audioguide that tracked me via gps and gave me info based off of it- ...

... of the non tourist sights and sounds of Beijing before a visit to the Great Wall before moving onto Pingyao. A few observations about Beijing. Firstly, the smog is one of the first things you notice, it makes London or even LA's air pollution seem tame. Standing on the street outside our hostel you could see the haze of pollution between our vantage point and the buildings opposite, that's an air gap of probably less than 20-30m!
