One Last Night In The Suck

Much to our dismay, we were to spend one more night—just 14 hours—in Beijing before our flight to TSA—Taipei's small inner-city airport. We didn’t see anything new in Beijing, but we were assailed by touts and unhelpful people, reminding us of just how much China sucks compared to almost every other country we have visited, and certainly when held in comparison to Taiwan. Even Kashgar, the most remote city in the most remote province, is ...

Great Wall, freezing cold, skewered scorpions

... pleasant chap, he should have realised that it is a mistake to strike up a conversation early in the journey unless you have chat to last you. As it was we ran out of common ground with some time to go, and I was left with the problem of how to resume my music without being rude. I opted for the gradual method - first the earphone on the far side, giving him the option of resuming conversation; then the other. The Wall was awesome! The area was especially beautiful as ...

Kiinan puoli on siistia ja Mongolia vaikuttaa kehitysmaalta Kiinaan verrattuna. Akkukayttoiset pyorat ajelevat ympari kaupunkia ja ihmiset ihmettelevat valkonaamoja. Saamme helposti liput yobussiin Pekingiin, vaikka aseman eteen on taas eksynyt vahan lahjattomia taksimiehia, joiden mukaan junat ja bussit eivat kulje - heidan taksinsa kuitenkin kulkisivat ...

Ancient Chinese Secret

... for long periods of time and for long distances. Turns out, they believe that walking backwards allows for Karmic Reversal...meaning your can undo mistakes! Genius. No wonder the Chinese live such long and healthy lives! They exercise well into old age, and don't have to worry or stress about screwing up...they can erase it all! Why didn't we think of that? We had to wait for for TiVo to rewind our TV shows, but they have been backing up for centuries!

A Rainy Night in Beijing...without Vicki Lawrence

... the tunnel. A Chinese restaurant full of neon lights, Kung Pao Chicken and even more important Tsing Tao beer waits like a love-struck New Kids on the Block fan at a Mall Opening where the boys are going to perform. I decide to have dinner and wait out the storm, when like a miracle from above, a cab pulls into the parking lot to drop off some eager diners. Before they are able to get both feet on the ground and their umbrella fully ...

Stuck in China! (so we do the Forbidden City)

... and also took a peak in the imperial gardens in the back. The Chinese really have a thing or interestingly shaped rocks. A lot of the imperial garden is rock actually. Also some really old and knobbly trees, including two that have entwined their branches. We could have spent more time in the Forbidden City, but it was really, really cold. So we decided to find somewhere warm to eat and then retreated back to our hostel. ~Travis

... to see). Most everyone here came to Beijing from the countryside, often four or five people share one small room, and three or four families share one very small courtyard which has a common kitchen and a common bathroom. The average income for one family is $AUD100 a month. Not very much considering that I go through that much every one to two weeks. That place has definitely got me interested, so I hope I can find the time to come regularly once term starts again.

In a literal translation, it often comes across as an emotional communication, communicating through a feeling rather than a precise meaning. Or perhaps that's just us failing to understand. Horns on cars are also used to communicate in a different way here. In the US, a blast on the horn often means "Danger", "I'm angry" or in the case of a ...
