Wed Oct 1st drove out to Promontory Summit location of the Central Pacific & Union Pacific Railroads met on May 10, 1869.

Watched as they moved the two replicas from storage shed onto tracks as they had done in 1869.

Then continue west for 5 miles along rail beds. ...

... never again. We had to walk about mile to get to the water, which is stinky and there is a layer of brine shrimp and flies to wade through. The lake is about 5 times saltier than the ocean, which makes it real easy to float. In fact, it is hard to keep your feet down underneath you. There is a paved road around the island and there is a herd of about 600 buffalo on the island. ...

... On to Dinosaur National Monument in the morning (forecast... rain).

Time for bed... It's 1:40 a.m.

Later in the morning (!), after a few hours' sleep, we had a nice complementary hot breakfast at the Crystal Inn before departing at ~9:00 a.m. A little later than we wanted, but we needed the sleep after last night's late drive.

Destination for today, Dinasaur National Monument and then Rangely, CO to spend the night...

Today I caught up with Mike and his wife Margaret. Mike and his wife have been our guides on 2 or 3 outings from Golden Spike. We had planned to leave today but making connections with Mike and his wife had us change plans.. We'd tried to make this connection last week but had to postpone it.. We’re a week past our last snow fall and its been warming some.. ...

All the buildings and other structures are gone.. brick from the liners of the boilers is scattered for miles along the road bed… On some of the Y’s the ties are still lying on the ground and if your looking really hard you might see a date nail, spike or other metal part left over the years…

Some of the locations had signs that gave an overview of what was at this location ...
