    ... colonial times it was the residence/headquarters for the Commander of the British forces. That life certainly ended with the reunification of Hong Kong in 1997. We tooled around Hong Kong searching for the Sheung Wan neighborhood. We found the neighborhood although by this time I was drenched from the high humidity so we made our way to the Star Ferry to head across Victoria Harbor and back to the extreme comfort of our hotel room.

We made our way up to the third floor and then we had to find our actual guesthouse which was basically a clutch of grotty flats that had been converted into various guesthouses. I don't think any rooms on this level had windows and there were signs everywhere that sad 'WHEN there is a fire do not use the lift'. That statement filled me with a sense of well being. Our guesthouse owner was half asleep when we eventually found him and not best pleased to have been waiting ...
