... through LaJunta and Las Animas before arriving in the little community of Hasty. From there it was a right turn on FM 24 and in a short two miles we were at the check in station for the state park. John Martin Reservoir is - or maybe I should say "was" - a very large lake BEFORE the drought. We did, however, notice on the drive that the area looked like the land described in "The Grapes of Wrath". We're talking serious dust bowl, folks. Fortunately we had reserved a site ...

... to Santa Fe, still was part of Mexico at the time. 500 of the miles were through Kansas. That may sound a bit ignorant, but as Gareth said, today's mission was to eat some miles, heading north for the first time on the trip. The further we got into Kansas the more the landscape changed, I hadn't seen any of my ...

... driving across a short section of the Oklahoma Panhandle, (Have you noticed how the US is 'big' on panhandles?), and all I can say for Oklahoma is I'm not sad it's not a longer drive. No traffic though! We enter Kansas and stop at a MacDonald's to use the WiFi and book a room in Dodge City. Good luck! "Thar' mus' be sumthin happinin in Dodge!" Cuz' there's next to nothing available. Dodge City's claim to fame is Wyatt Earp and the TV show 'Gunsmoke' which was set ...
