A very long drive and at least one stop at our new favourite store, Walmart. We found our hotel with little fuss.. God bless phones and GPS (how did we ever manage before?). We spent about 4 hours walking around the historic district of Charleston. Beautiful old homes dating back to the 1690's. One of the larger homes near the water had recently sold for 28 million. We were able to tour one of these homes but interior pictures were not permitted. The downtown area seems to be primarily residential - no office towers. …
No pictures today. We spent the day in transit. Ran into major roadwork near Savannah and took a detour on smaller roads. Most of the land mass in this area is low lying swamp. Very flat and meandering rivers everywhere. Lots of swampland for sale - cheap. 5 acres for about $25,000 - $50,000. The weather tonight is quite cloudy with possible rain …
... driver as we all drove downtown in the Sachmobile. Charleston is a cool laid back city. Seemed like the people there were either super rich or super poor. We wandered the streets and checked out the city market, where you can watch locals weave baskets. Today being September 11th the flags outside the custom and excise building were flying at half mast, and people had written messages of sympathy on the pavement.
... that while my friends and I were at the baggage claim getting our luggage, the rest of the company boarded a van and took off for Kiawah....without us! Since it was late in the evening, we had to get an airport hotel for the evening, and we weren't picked up until late Saturday evening, even though we had to fly home Sunday.
