After the beauty of the Monterey Peninsula and restful stay with my dear friend Joan, it was quite a shock to drive so long in searing heat to the middle of nowhere it seemed.
There were so many trucks all vying for a place on the road, making Paul very nervous and upset.
Thank goodness for a new car with efficient a/c But the hotel more than made up for that ghastly drive.

Well today was a short day only 180 miles. We had a late start 1045 and arrived at 1530 (330 PM) We paralleled Route 66 and the camp is right off it. We now are in California ant the gas is $4.29 for regular. OUCH! ...
... once again into the time warp. The original diner from 1937 consisted of 9 stools at the counter and 3 booths. Today it is more than 5 times that size but the walls are covered in movie memorabilia. Peggy Sue worked in the movie industry hence the great collection. There is a fabulous souvenir shop attached that sold so much stuff. We spent ages just looking around and then decided to have lunch in the diner. Once again the service was so fast, the staff ...
... on Facebook. We ate lunch at Bubba Gump Shrimp on the pier. What a fun place and beautiful big beach.
Rhett, I took the picture of the snake for you. It was a little bigger than the one you almost stepped on at the campground!
Santa Monica Pier is the unofficial end of Route 66 so that was our destination. There is also a plaque dedicated to Will Rogers ...

Good food, good people and good price.
It was our stop between Disneyland and Vegas (what's the difference)
Good shopping at the outlets and proximity to all of the desert attractions including the Old Route 66.
