    ... tourist boom that brings throngs to the mountain top year-round. There are several ways to reach the 14,110-foot summit. We opted to take the world-famous Pikes Peak Cog Railroad to reach the summit that inspired Katherine Lee Bates to write "America the Beautiful" in the late 1800s.

    You can also drive the 19-mile Pikes Peak Highway, but we had been wisely and truthfully advised that driving meant the driver would miss out on the spectacular scenery along the way.

    ... It's a long walk down!

    One of the delightful experiences we encountered on the trip was our seat-mates, Erline and Mike who were a delightful couple from Texas heading to the state of Washington. We had great conversations both going up and returning.

    On the way home we stopped and picked up some dinner and had it back in our room.
