... center of the city. Driving through the city was more hectic even than Christchurch; maybe it is because it is a university town. It is also built on a mountainside and the streets are very steep, requiring us to stop at stoplights on streets similar to those in San Francisco. It claims having the “steepest street in the world,” reportedly 38 degrees. The Gut Buster Race is held each Feb, and the winners race up and back in about 2 minutes.

East Of Dunedin

... had decided that everything should be moved round and pretty much negated the work we'd done. Martin told me later he had to restrain himself from popping her over the head with his spade. I told him this would probably have led to us not getting paid and he had done the right thing. After a good wash we went out to celebrate our hard graft with two German fellows from the hostel - Andy and Johan - by each eating a five hundred gram steak each. Now them's good eats ...

Chocolate & Penguins

... rather than in Conservation centres or zoos was unbelievable. These were hunted to near extinction but are slowly recovering and when we visited there were plenty of little pups playing in the rock pools.

From here it was a short but cold and windy walk to see the penguins and sea lions on another beach. Passing through the gate it was about 30 seconds before we got to see a penguin who happily stood 5 metres away from us ...

On to Dunedin

... feet!!! HUGE!! We even got to view chicks. All this was viewed from a hide atop Taiaroa Head high above the city. As you can see we also had fun on the Speights Brewery Tour. Drinking the best tap beer we had ever tasted at 12:00 noon!! We went to a yellow eyed penguin preserve too. Check out the picture. This is the rarest penguin in the world. We viewed them from tunnels and hides ...

Rainy Dunedin

... overnight stop but it was quite quick going back down again. It was really cloudy when we set off but as we came out above the treeline there were brilliant views as we were above the clouds too. As we were reaching the peak of our walk the clouds started burning off so we could see the lakes and valleys as well. We camped the previous night in a nice secluded spot by a river 2km's south of Te Anau and went back to camp again and an adventure race of ...

... and very poor visibility, so we decided to continue our trip towards the Catlins, in the South of the island.

... different outside of Ireland because it doesn't travel well.... NOT SO... Guiness is actually a contracted beer outside of Ireland... thus, although the recipe used is the same, the ingredients are slightly different ... ie) the water in New Zealand tastes different than the water in Ireland.. likewise with the hops and malt and whatever else goes in... next, in Dunedin and New Zealand, alcohol production drops by 33% when ...

Disappointing Dunedin but awesome Otago

... as well as the rare Stewart Island Shag and many other birds. We then went into the open sea and suddenly out of the blue came an Albatross, which really are huge and quite magnificent. After the boat trip we drove a short way to Taiaroa Point and the Royal Albatross centre where we had a guided tour of the centre including the famous disappearing gun. In thelate 19th ncentury, the NZ authorities were very worried about ...

The South East and Otago Penninsula

... and a visit to the Dunedin Public Art Gallery. Then it was off to Speight's Brewery for a tour and beer tasting. After an interesting hour with an odd remale guide it was time to taste the six beers - and you served yourslef! We got chatting and ended up in the brewery's pub next door with two young lads from Tamworth and Leamington talking about travelling etc. Enjoying the company and good beer we settled down to some dinner before heading back.
