... is on a scale that has to be imagined. The cobbled or paved floor for example is 15 tiers thick as all emperors seemed to have a fear of assassins tunneling in to do mischief. ... We wandered along the walls for several hours late one afternoon, and on sunset, thousands of lanterns along the wall lit up. Beautiful!

At the end of our third day, we boarded yet another overnight train, this time bound for Shanghai. I was, at this point, not looking forward to another night on a Chinese train - the chinese tend to be very noisy, and talk on their phones at all hours of the night!
