All of that said, I find it tremendously exhausting to be immersed in the language as I am now. When I have come to China before, I have not really spoken any Chinese. So, it was easy to just disengage at dinners, etc. Now, however, I know enough to be dangerous, and the people I am with know I know some Chinese. Early start with no hot water, not impressed. With a bit of arguing we were able to keep our room all day without charge. 3 hour minibus ride to the wall with a take out McD's breakie. We apparently had an English speaking guide that didn't do much expect ask for tips, she didn't get a tip! So arrival at the wall with this awesome view of mountains but no sighting of wall ...
