Rotorua.

Terry, Ian and I finished work on this Friday evening and set of for a weekend of fun in Rotorua. We stopped off in Hamilton at a lovely restaurant called Domaine (www.domaine.co.nz) and had a beautiful 2 course meal. Katrina our waitress was funny and lovely. We eventually arrived at The Geneva Motor Lodge (www.genevamotorlodge.co.nz) at about midnight and the owner was not very happy with us arriving so late but there was no check in limit on the details. He wouldn't let us order breakfast ...

A strange eggy woft in the air!....

The drive into town gives you glimpses of what's to come. As you drive in, you are greeted by belching clouds of sulphur just to the side of the road in places. This is a very thermally active place. Rotarua has been a special place for many years, both to the early Maoris' as well as the later Europeans. It is the most touristic place we have been to in New Zealand. Most of the motels here have hot tubs or spa pools in the rooms, and our modest motel was no exception. We booked in, and our l...

Rotorua - 11/2/09 - 14/2/09

Travelling up from Napier to Rotorua we saw a sight that made us laugh. As we were winding our way round the bendy roads, a large vehicle appeared round one of the bends with a sign "SLOW VEHICLE, HOUSE TO FOLLOW", we couldn't quite work this out until, round the next bend, came an even bigger lorry with a ready-made house on the back : the sight did make us laugh and, unfortunately, we did not have a camera to the ready to take a pic! Rotorua was one of the more unusual NZ towns we have visi...

Smelly City!

... camping in our car, there was a few other travellers there too.
As our car is huge inside it was rather comfortable with a duvet over both of us we were warm, until i (Jo) nicked most of it during the night! Whoops!
The day before we had bought a portable stove so we had somewhere to make brews and cook our food. We were set up for the night and very happy.
The next day we headed into Rotorua but as it ...

The Highest Raftable WATERFALL in the WORLD!

... smell of "sulphur" Rotorua is a pleasant little town. Very sleepy and not a whole lot to do but as an area there was more to do than was possible for time and financial reasons! Whitewater rafting, caving, sky diving, zorbing, bungy jumps - you name it, you could do it around Rotorua! Not to mention the abundance of culture and Geo thermal activity. There are more spas and "sulphur" emitting hot spots that anywhere I've ever been in the world and that aspect of the area was ...

A windy day

As I was passing through I stopped in to have a look at Rotoura. I had planned to stay as its supposed to be a happening place, but it seemed very quiet and not many people there. So I took some pics and headed out again, heading to Taupo, that being my destination of choice.

Rotorua - Day 2

... one of the natural wonders of the world - the pink and white terraces (which were formed from oosing hot water combined with minerals from the ground). On our walk around the village excavations we also came across a meandering stream which eventually turned into a waterfall. The boys got pretty close to take some photos and I did a short video which you can view on this entry. More to come soon! William

... adventure sports. Like Queensland. On the way to Rotorua, we stopped by in Taupo and visited Huka Falls. This is a magnificent waterfall which rushes down the Waikato River. The waterfall drop is 11 metres and is absolutely stunning. (David: The stunning bit is that it drops that 11 metres whizzing through a narrow gorge. The pictures explain it better.) Next, we went to Craters of the Moon. This is a 50,000 metre square geothermal field. Before you lies the vast stretch of arid ...

Rotorua (Day 1)

We arrived Rotorua late in the afternoon with alot on the agenda. This city is known for extreme sports and we wanted to do most that they had to offer. I'll be quick with what we did on day 1 in Rotorua. We did the luge run 5 times in the cold and pouring rain. On run 4 the weather let up a bit so we really got some speed. The last run Mike went all out and crashed the luge in the rain. He was alright though ...

Top of the North Island - Enter my future wife!

... insane redneck kiwi guy. It all sounds a bit tacky when I tell you he displayed pigs, cows, chickens, sheep dogs, sheered sheep with old methods and told us how the old-timers would chop down trees. But actually it was very absorbing and highly entertaining and we laughed till our jaws ...
