Okay, so I think the official word for last night's experience was 'oops'. Why oops, you ask? Let me explain... Yesterday I was staying in Cobram. Cobram is a tiny little town on the Murray River, which is, of course, in drought a the moment, and in desperate need of water. The Murray River suffers various ailments due to lack of flow (which I'm sure you've all heard about at various times) so I ...
Kyabram, Victoria, Australia rossis_on_tour... fun this week, we have been picking pears the size of plums and it takes forever to fill the bins! We're all a bit disheartened, plus we can now add 'extreme rain picking' to our fruit picking CV! We had to go home early today as we had rain all day, its been so long since I've seen rain that I'm not quite sure anymore what to do when it rains! On Tuesday we seen the family of Kangaroos in the ...
Cobram, Victoria, Australia katandstevie... to be approved. I think compared to most fruit picking farms, we've got a pretty good one - the staff are really friendly, and the location isn't that bad either - near the river and about 3 hours travel from Melbourne. People are constantly coming and going, so we're meeting loads of new people, but mainly we hang around with a few Irish people from Limerick and Derry. Sometimes the place is kindof like a hippy commune, there are little groups of people ...
Cobram, Victoria, Australia katandstevie... bigger than the sizing ring, trying to find these in the hottest weather Victoria had ever experienced was extremely tough but we all worked through it - drinking lots of water and pouring water over ourselves to avoid sun stroke...Slowly but surely we realised that 'size picking' is a very loosely used term and that as long as the pear was relatively big it went in the bin....The bin's themselves are absolutely huge, everyone gets a ...
Cobram, Victoria, Australia katandstevieIt has been hotter here than Brisbane!!! The trip down was uneventful and really rather boring. THe first night we stayed at Moree and had a swim in the artesian pool at the motel. We wish we had stayed at one of the others though as there was a wedding on and from about midnight until 3am there was a group of people standing outside out room talking loudly and we didn't get much sleep. We did eventually ...
Cobram, Victoria, Australia karana... cut last week... so what i hear you say....well it happened in true jennny style. well i got the name of a hair dresser from anna and a number so booked an appt for thurs 5pm. she told me it was near this shop target. well i leave work early and cycle down on my push bike to the hairdressers. i get there and there is no name of the hairdressers advertised so i go in and say i have an appt for 5pm and my name. well this hairdresser takes me in and starts to wash my ...
Shepparton, Victoria, Australia jennyreid... this country of ours, just a little. Bahmah looked a pretty little town, but unfortunately by then I was in a hurry to get the washing off the line when I got back to the van. I need not have bothered as it was almost as wet as it had been when I put it out on the line in the foggy morning. A couple of dryer loads whilst I prepared potato patties and veggies for dinner, took care of the wet washing.
Tocumwal, Australia newtripper... to leave but couldn't as we had no money to go anywhere. Then by sheer luck Outbackpackers rang Colette as they had found us somewhere to work so we immediately told the dutch couple where they could stick their job and headed back to Melbourne to organise flights for getting back to Queensland. I would like to thank Helen, Peter, Elyse and Mark for putting up with us both for so long, as without their generosity I doubt we would be where we are today, Thankyou!!!!
Emerald, Victoria, Australia clivencolyThat's what all Aussies say, "how ya goin?" It's really stupid and annoying. What do you mean how AM I going? I dunno, by foot? Taking a bus later on today.. bah! Oh well, I refuse to conform. Anyways, up 3 hours North of Melbourne in Numurkah (had a tough time with the pronounciation myself, it's like Newmerica) and visiting Matt for the weekend. I took the train (they have an amazing train network here) to Shepparton and then a 20 imn bus ride to Numurkah where Matt ...
