... got back home we had been in the car for 15 hours and were exhausted and extremely disappointed that our visit and camping trip had been thwarted. But we were also pretty grateful that the delay in our departure had prevented us from being further along the route and perhaps in a far more precarious place... the way we figure it, we probably would have been somewhere in the Gorge and perhaps involved in the rock slides and devastation in there.

We broke camp from the Cleghorn picnic area at 8 am knowing we would be seeing our friend Coppertone again. We got a double dip of trail magic from him, the root beer floats in the evening and then bananas in the morning. As well as a wealth of useful information, Coppertone was a very interesting individual to meet. He lives in a off roadish RV type vehicle with his bicycle and dirt bike. ... beer with Eric (sadly Erica couldn’t make it out of work to meet us too) and then evening visit to Cousin Pat and Christine and Karsen before home for a last evening with Great Grandad and Grandpops for some reminiscing and another rendition of the song Grandpops Clair had written for London! Then it was bed for the night to get a good start in the morning for North California to hit wine country and to dip London’s feet in the Pacific!!

... cycle. We kept seeing them in groups, some with a dozen or more riders. The road was two lane most of the way so we didn't have to worry about holding anyone up. We drove through Malibu (waved to Steve & Carol's place on the way by), past Malibu Colony (where all the really rich and famous people live), past Cher's house (the only one we knew) and past some beautiful shacks on the beach.

At Santa Monica, we got a brief glimpse ...

Elwood went to sleep beautiful and was pretty much charm brought to life. Except for his final words to us tonight when I was talking about what we are doing tomorrow. He just said, ‘I don’t want to go anywhere hot’. Oh ...
