... who in 1903 made the first powered flight there . On our drive in we visited the Wright monument to flight, and saw where the first flights took place over 100 years ago...at Kill Devil Hills.

Other friends who we have met through homeforexchange (Glenna & Jerry ) were here waiting for us - our 3rd reunion in as many years ..this time we are exploring ...

... Lighthouse. It is very similar in design to the one we visited on Cape Hatteras yesterday, but it is only 165 feet tall. It is properly pronounced 'body’, for the Body family for whom the island was named. How the spelling was changed from Body to Bodie is not clear. Since we had just climbed the Cape Hatteras one yesterday, and there was a wait to climb this one, we elected not to climb this lighthouse and headed back home.

... 1999, because the sand was eroding from under it. They moved it 2900 feet in 22 days. It was not disassembled but moved as it was, 200 feet tall and on a platform being rolled along a leveled roadbed. Would have liked to see that. The graveyard museum had a lot of civil war history in it and a big bunch of diving gear. Guess they needed to fill space. It had a lot of info on the Monitor, and a replica of it's turret. Not a big museum but an interesting, low profile ...
