... a magnificent structure and just to see it close up was an experience in itself. The Old Courthouse, next to the arch is also a beautiful looking building, however again, due to the government shut down we were not able to go inside. All in all I found Saint Louis to be a very pleasant little city with several very interesting attractions to visit. However it was a little on the quiet front and for a Saturday afternoon it felt slightly deserted.
... ploughed on and continued with the second tent, however the seal was broken and toilet trips become more frequent. During one such trip Tanya befriended some guys and girls from the US Military, most noticeably John and Mallory, who we latched on to for the rest of the day. We spent the remaining two hours chatting and drinking, and being guided by the locals as to which to try and which to miss. It turns out that Chipotle Ale is exceptional. ... br> And as we approached St. Louis the land was littered with billboards, some with ads, some pleading for ads, a mar on the landscape of this beautiful country. The State of Maine outlawed billboards back in the 1960's, allowing tourist to better enjoy the vistas and not be confronted by advertisements as they came to enjoy what Maine had to offer. I miss that.

Duke, Washington is more of an Ivy wannabe. I’ve gotten to like visiting
university campuses. They’re usually very pleasant environments full of smart
people in a country plagued by ignorance and anti-intellectualism. Universities
are an important part of culture and contributor to it, and the U.S. still has
some of the top ones in the world, including Washington University.
