... why. It was a breathtaking view. OF course, this time of year you need to be cautious of taking deep breaths due to the large swarms of bugs (mosquitoes, gnats and black bugs of some kind) that would surround your head.

Well, tomorrow we're going to head further east and then turn south into mainland Michigan. More antique stores to find, more lakes to see, and several train rides that I'm hoping to find open this time of year. More later.

We finally had an 'all clear' day for crossing the Mackinac Bridge and took advantage of it. ... beaqring rocks in the refuse heap of an abandoned copper mine. A pretty unique experience and we can't wait to see what they find when they cut the rocks open in their studio. The sunset and the final rays of golden sunshine made some of the pine branches glow like burnished copper - truly magical.

... from the mine owners exploitation instead. Driving up we passed a monastery, eastern Catholic, complete with Onion dome. They had a fantastic bakery and made jams and jellies from local berries and fruit. We indulged... Copper Harbor is at the end of the road, a former mining down, now a tourist destination and terminus for a boat trip to Isle Royale 48 ...

... a hole in the wall cafe in Hancock. Food was delicious and lines of locals kept showing up. We saw that they had pasties coming out of the oven so we went back for a pre-dinner snack - took them to go - and found a city park (along a lake) - now have experienced real local fare.

Today was a history adventure in copper mining at the turn of the century. This area of the country has all these mine shafts that they dug out the copper. ...
