... s much more of a summery, relaxed atmosphere for me. There was plenty of lawn space for chairs and blankets so we didn't feel cramped at all, and there were many booths close-by to purchase fair-style food, beer and wine. It was a perfect evening under the stars! I can't wait to go back next summer!

I had visited Ironstone winery a few weeks prior during a day of wine tasting in the little downtown of Murphys, and wanted to stop by ...

... to go for a swim in the river. We found a quite spot before going to see the main sights of the park. We saw lots of wild deer, squirrels & chipmunks. The famous Yosemite waterfall was only a trickle but the kids wanted to climb the boulders to stand underneath! On the way to Glacier point we were lucky enough to see a black bear in the distance walking by the side of ...

... suspicions this was not the right way to Yosemite. I finally stopped to ask direction to an old couple walking their dog, and they gladly told us we were totally on the wrong track - we were heading north of the Park.
Thanks to their informations we found the was to Yosemite's west entrance.

Hey, sorry about the lag. We've been without decent internet for 3 days now. We have the internet this morning, but we are heading out to raft in Yosemite. Everything is going great. California has been awesome. The sun is finally shinning! We have to head out but we will get this updated in the next day or so. Hope everybody is well.

This was actually a pretty constant theme during our whole trip - despite the myriad geographical and urban jewels that the country had to offer, most people hadn't really bothered to see many of them - even the ones on their own doorstep. Indeed the standard response from most people when we tell them we're travelling across the whole country tends to be something like "get outta here"/"SHUT UP"/"no way, you're kidding me".

... glance but we had an entire apartment with a full kitchen, wireless internet and a large, lovely veranda overlooking the side yard. Fresh flowers filled every room - and as luck would have it, the owner just had a graduation party on the premises and told us to help ourselves to the leftovers - all the snacks, cake, and drinks you could imagine, plus tons of fruit. ... to be the center of activity here and as we left, a number of motorcyclists emerged and roared off on their bikes. We continued our trip on to Yosemite through the foothills, skipped the 'Old Priest's Grade" route and took the newer more modern road up to Groveland. The view was spectacular over the granite blocks bordering the road. Some of the landscape was still recovering from the large fires in the early 1990's; in other areas the majestic trees were intact.
