... the lake (can't go wrong there!) with Ray on the lookout for squirrels. These little fellows were a different colour from those we had seen years ago in other parts of the U.S. After the lake, we wandered back "Uptown" and enjoyed the Newtown feel to the shops. I noticed a little cafe that looked quite appealing because it had a sandwich board advertising fresh juice! I stopped Ray and we went in looking for something nutritious. It ...

... to Monterey. A small compact town, green and studded with architecture modelled on European / English cottages. A town full of personality, with art galleries, unique gift shops, eateries, and neat hilly streets. So picturesque! We browsed through the main streets, took some photos of the city hall that Clint Eastwood used to be Mayor in and then proceeded to San Francisco. By this point and after 2 days on the road, ...

... for our GPS guide Go-Car tour of SF. This thing is basically a 50cc scooter in a small buggy body. The idea is you rent it for 2 hrs, follow the track that the GPS lady guides you on (with great commentary). You are encouraged to pull over as often as you want, take as many of the detours as they offer, and it becomes obvious pretty quickly you won't get round it in 2 hours, and you are charged for the extra time. We got 15 mins ...

... at a basic level. It's nice to feel that you can just do your own thing and not feel pressured in anyway. People can be who they want to be and perhaps that is the good and bad thing about America; the American dream. The most indulgent. It was a pretty heavy weekend and we all felt pretty tired over the next few days. Caitlin took me up to Berkeley one of the days and we drove around the university campus (which, by the way, is absolutely huge). We drove up to Tilden park which ...

... huge Rocky Mountains and trees protruding from the sides. It felt so much more rewarding due to the extreme climb to the top. The climb down was rather precarious but we managed it without a hitch (of course) and made our way back to the van. Our next stop was danville, a town outside San Francisco where jenny grew up. It has a state park really near called mount Diablo so we thought we could do a small hike here as well. We visited Jenny's old house and school and this was fairly ...
