    ... our itinerary as time, energy and carefully saved travel funds allow.     ... the kids drop me on Highway 164, drive 5 miles ahead and wait. Then we started to think about how much time that would take (another 1.5 hours, probably) and Scarlet still had to drive back to Portland. In the end, we decided that the strenuousness of the trail more than made up for the lack of miles - elevation gain of 2,182 feet in 8 miles.
