29 December Rain rain rain! Waffled around in the morning, had brunch with the last of the Christmas leftovers and headed for Rotorua early afternoon. Moved into the nice motel and declared it a successful choice purely on location, especially after finding out that the New Years Eve party is indeed alcohol free! Had a couple of drinks on the terrace then Russ went for a walk in the rain while Yana and I checked out the thermal hot pool in the motel. Very nice indeed. Few drinks on the terrac...
Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand russdi... paid a visit. Nice lakes but the vantage points were a bit disappointing! The rain started to set in as we headed to Rotarua town centre but it was still warm. Spent an hour or so walking about, quite a nice town apart from the smell of sulphur!! Headed for the Waiteti Trout Stream Holiday Park where we are staying tonight. Morgan and I went spinning for trout in the rain but no luck.

Distance Travelled today – 140 km. Rotorua, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand awsomeWe awoke in the morning to rain once again, and went to Eddie's flashy camper for a cup of tea. Here Eddie investigated our wet weather options - aka white water rafting. The leaflets all demonstrated a lovely range of rivers to negotiate, including some gentle ones for nervous / beginners and the grade 5 Kaituna river, complete with 7m waterfall!

Having called around several companies, Eddie discovered the only river operating ...
Roturua, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand yelleandjon... been raining lots. I had originally planned on staying 2 days but with the bad weather and suffering a cold i checked the weather and found the following day should be better so i stayed an extra day and luckily the weather did improve. So i got chance the walk around the town a bit and walked down to a geothermal park, where i saw lots of mud pools, hot springs and a geyer. I also got a free ticket for a 45min Maori Cultural Show which was very good.
Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand vicki.illsley... geyser, the mud pools, the uses of the various trees and plants for making clothing, medicines, dyes, etc. Her stories were interesting, funny and entertaining... you got a glimpse into the real life of the Maori and hers in particular. It felt like quite a privilege to have her as a guide as we walked about the grounds. We also went and observed the wood carving students as well as the ...
Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand jessnallie... way or another, praying for a safe trip. The river run through a rainforest which was truly spectacular and by the way, this is a grade V river rafting it is the highest grading if I am not wrong. I am not going to tell you if the fall is scary for it is best to come experience it yourself. Maybe you could check out the picture on my facebook and see for yourself by the time you read this. After the waterfall, a few more rapids ...
Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand traventure83... let me say that it knocked my socks off! Their voices were absolutely fantastic!! (I would have bought a cd if it wasn't $40!). We got to see a lot of their culture....we learned their dances, the Haka!, their greetings, traditions, songs, ways and beliefs. Definitely worth the money and something you should do if coming this way. After the performance we got to see how our hangi meal was prepared before eating it. When you usually come to these shows you expect food. Not great ...
Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand euniceandbyoung... Jack potted the black mid game! Today we are off the Polynesian Spa which is a series of smelly pools which are apparently good for you. Day is yet again beautiful. Polynesian Spa - very nice experience, there are many pools all with different properties & all of them look out over the lake. A very nice way to spend $25! That afternoon we took a drive along the Thermal Highway - head out to Taupo on the 5 & then turn off the ...
Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand tanyaconnor... parlour and managed to get my eyelashes dyed and eyebrows dyed and shaped - bit of a treat. It's very odd having someone do something like that to you when neither of you speak the other's language ... However, I did find that "Ow!" is pretty universal! So, me and F said goodbye to the lovely Laura and her son Andrew that we met at the hotel and with a last meal of veggies and rice under my belt set off to the airport ...
Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand travellingjools... Spitze!
