Well. I did not expect to be as blown away as I was by this trip this weekend. In the guidebook, it says that for most people this was their most memorable experience of China, and for me, I think it was the second. Next to Zhangjiajie. But, no matter. It was very similar and almost as amazing.

So, I thought it would be a good idea to take the sleeper night train out to Guilin. I arrived at 4 a.m. and had lots of time to walk to the dock. It kind of reminded me of my trip ...

And so how do you follow those pandas? Well, we decided it was by catching a flight to Guilin, the base for exploring the stunning Karst landscapes of southern China. Guilin is so dramatically different to the cityscapes of Beijing, Xi'an and Chengdu that at first it was tricky reminding ourselves we are still in China. All this pretty grass space and no one can use it except to look at. I choose a cement dock on the water shaded by a pagoda. I was hoping I could find a spot without a lot of people, but that didn’t work out, so I had a bit of spectators, but I’ve ...

... we decided to go for those and tough it out for the hour and a half trip into Shanghai. The train from Shanghai was a little bit trickier. There were only hard seats available (no sleeper seats left) so we had a choice between staying in Wuxi a few extra days and trying to get a sleeper, or just sucking it up and taking the hard seats to Guilin. Although the woman working at the train station did not speak English she could angle the computer screen so that we ...

On Saturday night we found a shop which sold fresh milk, Ian drank 2 bottles. He was very impressed. Fresh milk in China is a rare find.

On Sunday, we taught some more and again answered loads of questions in the big hall. Including 'how did you fall in love' and 'how many children will you have' which were a little awkward.
It is forbidden at their school to have relationships, so I think they were quite interested to see a young couple. We drew the line ...
