So, if I was feeling down at leaving Colombia, events at the Medellin airport conspired to make me forget my sadness.

On checking into my flight to LA via Fort Lauderdale I was asked for my ESTA which is, I learnt, an electronic authorisation for people heading to the states on passports who don't need a visa (which sounds suspiciously like a visa to me). So from here we head out to Vegas and then on to the a Grand Canyon. What a peculiar departure.

I travelled between cities as dusk fell to get to the right airport. The moon was big and beautiful and sat fatly on a distant ridge. I pulled off the highway and scrambled up a steep slope to take a photo. Then lost my glasses. Then searched for ages with a headlamp and failed to find them. I am nearsighted, but can get by with care.

Then, near midnight, I found out from a cab ...
