350 Main South Road, South Beach Greymouth, South Island, New Zealand, 3-762-6619
The Wild West Coast Having given up on the Franz Josef Glacier as it was shrouded in cloud and rain, we toured up the empty roads of the West Coast through dense rain forest and past great empty beaches with crashing surf. There is very little habitation. We stopped only at a the eccentric bushman's cafe, marled by a huge model of a sandfly, the plague of the West Coast, hanging outside. The cafe claimed to serve roadkill (presumably cooked; you see a huge number of opposums squashed on the r...
Greymouth, South Island, New Zealand john2112Took the transalpine train from Christchurch and touched my first snow. Amazing trip- a must do. Greymouth is a busy little area, but beautiful. Went to Shantytown and panned for gold than went quadbiking and got thoroughly muddied. The next day I did the Greymouth Caves. I could barely move afterwards, my body had had enough of crawling through tiny holes by then. I also so the pancake rocks just outside of town.

Luckily the next mornign in Greymouth was a lot warmer! We got up and fed the ducks that had spent the night under our campervan and then drove to the supermarket to stock up on a few things. We then waljked round the town- which was really strange and mostly consisted of cafes like all New Zealand towns! We didn't do a lot but had breakfast in a cafe- I had a boiled egg and a crab on a a stick! Greymouth wasn't that great compared to other places we had been- but it was a free ...

Marlborough Sounds
After a 3 hour ferry ride, we arrived at Picton in the south island.
We set up camp here for the night before heading to Anakiwa - the town at the start of the Queen Charlotte Track, one of New Zealand's Great Walks. Unfortunately, the full walk is three whole days long, and because we had the campervan we couldn't commit to the full thing. We still wanted to experience part of the track though as we had heard the views ...
Barrytown, South Island, New Zealand kikiblogtrot... SUPER cool, but pretty cool. The hostel was amazing. It was a huge mansion called Noah's Ark. Each room had a particular animal theme. In the monkey room, monkeys were painted all over the walls, and in the Zebra room, there was a zebra-skin bedspread and black and white stripes everywhere...that sort of thing. Obviously, jetting the next day to cruise to Franz Josef for some glacier action!!!
Greymouth, South Island, New Zealand bobbyvegas... the process; and it didn't feel like a rush to the bar. This brewery does bottles and two types of kegs only, but they manage to produce 6 mainstream beers (original, golden, radler, black, celtic, and pilsner (pilsner not brewed here), two special seasonal beers (summer and winter), and the odd one off like the (possibly) soon to be released cherry and chocolate stout. At the end there was a chance to sample each of the beers, this time poured ...
Greymouth, South Island, New Zealand alanv... which we undertook, torch in hand, in search of the glowworms which apparently live there. All we managed though, was to stumble around for a while in the damp and dark, stooped to avoid the rocky roof and unable to tell which way to go. The weather had brightened suddenly and conveniently for our viewing of Pancake Rocks and continued to brighten along the coastline as we passed through Barrytown (worth a picture of the sign I thought!) and on to Greymouth ...
